Haliburton’s Winter Carnival:

Embracing the Season
by Erin Lynch

You lace up a pair of skates and glide across an open lake under a blanket of stars and an omnipresent moon. To warm up, you return to the bonfire right on the ice where the echo of children’s laughter is the loudest noise for miles around. Imagine; this is only the first night of Haliburton’s annual winter carnival on February 24, 25, and 26, 2006.

Don’t miss out on this great chance to play in the snow, and enjoy winter in a pristine setting. The carnival takes over the lakeside town for three days. Pancake breakfasts, snow sculptures, ice golf, tobogganing, ATV rides for children, and a bed race right down the main street where the entire town comes out to watch and cheer contestants on. There are opportunities to test-run the newest snowmobiles of the year, as well as a poker run where participants travel by snowmobile to five different resorts, lodges, and restaurants picking up a card at each stop. At the end of the day, you submit your poker hand. There are prizes for the top three hands.

Take the opportunity to walk through Haliburton’s Sculpture Forest and experience a part of Haliburton’s burgeoning art’s community as birds trill and deer forage for food. Luxurious accommodation and dining abound allowing visitors a memorable, authentic winter experience.
